Mio’s Introduction to Kurobe Gorge

Hello, I’m Mio! Today, I’d like to introduce you to one of my favorite places, Kurobe Gorge.

Overview: Kurobe Gorge is located in Toyama Prefecture and is known as one of Japan’s most beautiful gorges. The Kurobe River flows through this area, surrounded by deep valleys, beautiful mountains, and rich nature, attracting many tourists and trekking enthusiasts.

History and Fun Facts

Kurobe Gorge was formed over thousands of years by the erosive action of the Kurobe River. It is one of Japan’s most rugged terrains, making development challenging. To address the electricity shortage in post-war Japan, the construction of the Kurobe Dam was undertaken between 1956 and 1963. This massive engineering feat involved over 10 million workers and cost 51.3 billion yen. The dam, at 186 meters high, remains Japan’s tallest and is a significant landmark.

Spring in Kurobe Gorge

Spring brings beautiful fresh greenery and blooming flowers. The entire gorge comes alive with vibrant green, making it an ideal season for trekking.

Summer in Kurobe Gorge

Summer offers lush green scenery and cool river breezes. River activities like swimming and fishing are popular during this season.

Autumn in Kurobe Gorge

Autumn features stunning fall foliage, coloring the gorge in vibrant reds and yellows. The best time to see the autumn colors is from mid-October to early November. Hiking in the crisp autumn air provides a pleasant and refreshing experience.

Winter in Kurobe Gorge

Winter covers the gorge in a blanket of snow, creating a serene and quiet landscape. Fewer visitors during this season allow for a peaceful connection with nature.

Recommended Trekking Courses

Trolley Train and Keyakidaira Area

  1. Kurobe Gorge Trolley Train: Enjoy a one-way trip from Unazuki Station to Keyakidaira Station, lasting about 1 hour and 20 minutes. During the ride, you can learn about the gorge’s attractions with a narration by Shigeru Muroi, a native of Toyama Prefecture.
  2. Keyakidaira Station Walk: Explore attractions like the Kawara Observation Deck, foot baths, Hitokui Rock, and Meiken Onsen around Keyakidaira Station. The Kawara Observation Deck offers views of Oku-kane Bridge, Oku-kane Mountain, and Meiken Mountain, and you can enjoy a foot bath while taking in the scenery. Hitokui Rock is a beginner-friendly course, taking about 10 minutes one way.
  3. Sobo-dani Onsen: If you have time, extend your walk to Sobo-dani Onsen, about a 50-minute journey each way.

  • From Tokyo, take the Super Azusa or Azusa limited express train from Shinjuku Station to Matsumoto Station. From Matsumoto, take a bus to Kamikochi, then transfer to a bus to Shin-Hotaka Onsen.
