Hello, I’m Mio! Today, I will introduce Sakurajima, an active volcano located in Kagoshima Prefecture. Known for its frequent eruptions, Sakurajima offers breathtaking scenery and rich nature. Here’s a 2-minute guide to trekking on Sakurajima.

Course Overview

There are several trekking courses on Sakurajima, but a popular one is the route to Yunohira Observatory. This trail is about 3 kilometers long and takes about 1.5 hours​.

Highlights

  1. Yunohira Observatory: At 373 meters above sea level, the observatory offers panoramic views of Sakurajima’s summit and Kagoshima City. On clear days, you can see Kinko Bay and the Kirishima Mountain Range.
  2. Crater Area: Along the trail, there are spots where you can observe volcanic activity up close. Stay within safe areas to experience the power of nature.
  3. Visitor Center: Before or after your trek, visit the center to learn about Sakurajima’s history and volcanic activity.

Access

Sakurajima is accessible by ferry from Kagoshima City, which takes about 15 minutes. From the ferry terminal, you can reach the trailheads by bus or taxi.
