Mount Takao Trekking Guide

Hello, I’m Mio! Today, I will introduce Mount Takao, located in Tokyo. Known for its rich nature and easy access from the city, Mount Takao is a popular spot for hikers year-round. Here’s a 2-minute guide to trekking on Mount Takao.

Course Overview

Mount Takao has several trekking routes, but the most popular is Route 1 (Omotesando Trail). This trail is about 3.8 kilometers long and takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to complete.


  1. Yakuoin Temple: Along the way, you will pass Yakuoin Temple, a historical site that has been a place of worship for centuries. Take a moment to appreciate its beautiful architecture and serene atmosphere.
  2. Summit: From the summit of Mount Takao, you can see Mount Fuji on clear days. The view is especially breathtaking during the autumn foliage season and the cherry blossom season in spring.
  3. Cable Car and Lift: If you get tired along the trek, you can take the cable car or lift for an easier ascent or descent.


  • Wear trekking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather.
  • The trails can get crowded, so it’s best to visit early in the day.
  • Take your trash with you to help protect the environment.


To get to Mount Takao, take the Keio Line from Shinjuku Station to Takaosanguchi Station, which takes about 50 minutes. From Takaosanguchi Station, you can walk to the trailhead​.
