Hakuba Mountain

This entry is part 1 of 12 in the series Discover Japan's Natural Beauty 1

Hello, I’m Mio! Today, I want to share detailed information about Hakuba Mountain, one of my favorite mountains in Japan.

Basic Information about Hakuba Mountain

Hakuba Mountain (Hakuba-dake) is part of the Northern Japanese Alps (Hida Mountains), spanning Nagano and Niigata prefectures. It stands at 2,932 meters. The mountain is known for its stunning alpine scenery and rich natural beauty, making it a popular spot for hikers and nature lovers.

Rich Nature and Alpine Plants

Hakuba Mountain is famous for its diverse alpine plants that bloom in the summer. The “Hakuba Great Snow Valley” (Hakuba Daisekkei) is especially notable, with a large snowfield that remains even in summer. The contrast between the snow and the blooming flowers is breathtaking.

Hiking Routes

There are several hiking routes to reach the summit of Hakuba Mountain. Here are some of the main ones:

  • Sarukura Route: This is the most common route, starting from Sarukura Trailhead, passing Hakuba-shiriyama Hut, and going through the Hakuba Great Snow Valley to the summit. It’s relatively easy to walk and popular among many hikers. Along the way, you can enjoy the clear streams of Hakuba-shiriyama River, perfect for a refreshing break.
  • Tsugaike Route: Starting from Tsugaike Nature Park, this route goes through Tenguhara and up to the summit. You can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the nature park, making it a pleasant hike even for tourists.
  • Great Snow Valley Route: This route goes over the snowfield that remains even in summer. While thrilling, it requires caution due to the risk of avalanches. It’s a bit challenging for beginners but very exciting.

Mountain Huts and Facilities

There are several mountain huts and rest spots around Hakuba Mountain. Here are some notable ones:

  • Hakuba Sanso: Located near the summit, this large mountain hut is popular among hikers. It offers lodging and a cafeteria, providing a comfortable place to rest while enjoying the magnificent views.
  • Hakuba-shiriyama Hut: Located along the trail, this hut offers rest and lodging for hikers aiming for the Hakuba Great Snow Valley.
  • Tengu Hut: A mid-point hut when using the Tsugaike Route, offering great views from Tenguhara.

Scenic Views and Highlights

From the summit of Hakuba Mountain, you can enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the Northern Japanese Alps. On clear days, you might even see Mount Fuji in the distance. Near the summit, you can also find “Hakuba Oike,” a beautiful pond that reflects the morning and evening sunlight, creating a picturesque scene.

Access

The most common access to Hakuba Mountain is from the Nagano Prefecture side. You can reach Hakuba Village via JR Oito Line or by bus. From Hakuba Village, buses are available to the trailheads.

Summary

Hakuba Mountain is a beautiful and renowned mountain in Japan, known for its rich nature, diverse hiking routes, and stunning scenery. It’s a place where hikers of all levels can enjoy the beauty of nature. I, Mio, am captivated by the charm of Hakuba Mountain and hope you get the chance to experience it too. Enjoy your hike!
